Our Story

Evelyn Yang Garland, Founder and Translator

Having graduated from one of China's most competitive and prestigious college programs in science, Evelyn worked in international development for The World Bank and Johns Hopkins before she established a career in language, a subject she has loved since childhood. She passed the ATA translation certification exam and the Maryland court interpreter exam on her first try, both of which had a passing rate below 20%.

As an accomplished translator and interpreter, Evelyn leads a team that has translated writings and speeches of the sitting president of China, and she regularly interprets in business negotiations and diplomatic meetings. Evelyn currently serves as a board member of the American Translators Association (ATA), the largest professional association for translators and interpreters in the United States. She is also a frequent workshop presenter.

With her analytical mind and linguistic skills, and experience in translating both written and spoken words in a wide variety of industries, Evelyn brings clarity and style to your words.

Marie Foley, Translator

We came to know Marie by chance—she reached out after seeing an old job ad and impressed us with her very first translation project. She has been a valued member of our team ever since.

A native English speaker from Chicago, Marie became interested in Chinese culture after her father introduced her to Chinese films. While volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in Yunnan, she realized that she enjoyed using her language skills to help people from different cultures achieve common goals and decided to become a professional translator. She appreciates that translation pushes her to keep learning and tests her with new and unexpected challenges.

Creative, yet detail-oriented, Marie enjoys crafting elegant translations. She continues to impress us with her ability to turn complex Chinese syntax into eloquent English translations.

Michelle LeSourd, Translator

Michelle and Acta’s founder, Evelyn, have both been active volunteers in their professional association—the American Translators Association. It is no wonder that their paths crossed many times, and they eventually joined forces to cooperate on a variety of translation projects.

A native of Seattle who has also lived in several other US states as well as China, Michelle was fascinated with language and culture from an early age. She fell in love with Chinese in college and became a translator after a diverse career in both the public and private sectors. Her experience in adminstration, project management, and meeting facilitation fuels her passion for helping people to communicate effectively.

Michelle has a keen eye for simplicity and style in a translated text. A true wordsmith, she never hesitates to go the extra mile to look for the best expression.

Robert took an interest in the Chinese language after meeting some international students at the University of Michigan. This unexpected interest quickly took root and grew into an abiding passion that led him to pursue intensive language studies in Beijing. He soon discovered his knack for cross-cultural communication and, after nearly four years of work and study in China, returned to the U.S. to pursue graduate studies.

Robert has found translation to be gratifying on a personal level, particularly because it welcomes his love for language and meticulous attention to detail. As a wide reader, he enjoys the opportunity to translate across a wide variety of fields and subjects, from contracts and patents to subtitles and slang.

Robert is professional, personable, reliable, and tirelessly committed to honing his craft. He also enjoys reading, travelling, and music-making, and may frequently be found introducing his children to the world of Chinese poetry.
